NOTE:

Collage composed of different prints and cards screened by opaline paper and transversed longitudinally by three black bands. The words ‘THE END’ are clearly repeated six times on the veil in the upper right-hand corner. The title Bombardamento di Bologna/Bombardierung von Bologna, a clear reference to the wartime years that the artist spent in the Emilia Romagna region’s capital, is picked out in Letraset along the painting’s lower edge. This work was part of the Disegni collage sul fascismo set (inv. 207), visually characterised by two bands of black cardboard at the top and bottom edges, and transversal bands dividing the picture into windows reminiscent of movie film frames. Many works in this series employ opal transparent paper to screen the underlying collage, plus side bands with rounded corners similar to ‘barn doors’ on spotlights. As specified in the titles, the collages refer to historical and private events: Bombardamento di Bologna, Affondamento dell’U.BOOT, Scomparsa di Pontecorvo da Bologna, Vita di Lulu de la Falaise, and Stanza dei conti (inv. 201, 206, 207, 243, 1127, 1132).
