A rectangle traced out with a brush in the centre of Schermo-like canvas frames a mixed-media painting at the centre, featuring a cover from the Little Lulu comic strip. The collage is crisscrossed by spots, brushstrokes and marks inspired by motifs from the language of comics, such as the small grey cloud in the upper right-hand corner, or the eyes on the black splodge at the bottom. As with other works from the same period, the direct use of comics coexists with an Expressionist and gestural layout, in which the meaning of the word is obscured by deliberately obstructive calligraphy, marred by speed of gesture, concealed by brushstrokes, hidden by collage, or characterised by negative-sign words such as nessuno, vietato, no (nobody, forbidden, no) or ‘the end’.
