A silver-alloy plate purchased by the artist from an antique dealer, with a dedication in English engraved in the centre, ‘To Aunt Polly and Uncle Ian / Your kindness and hospitality toward us still remains unforgettable after 18 years / Thanksgiving 1957 / Renée & Jules’. From the dedication, Mauri took the term ‘unforgettable’, engraved it onto the bottom of the plate, and incorporated it into the title not just of this work but a series of ‘oggetti indimenticabili’ (unforgettable objects), some of which were exhibited at the ‘Cose dell’altro mondo’ show in 1995 (inv. 410). As Laura Cherubini noted in the exhibition catalogue, the plate is ‘a souvenir of a history that in no way belongs to the artist. There is nothing personal or expressive about this object except the security of his choice: poetic intention acquires the world.’1
