NOTE:

A black band painted in tempera on paper, framing a drawing of a cinema screen, represented as a dark rectangle with rounded corners. On the lower edge of the frame, silhouettes similar to comic-book clouds represent the heads of the audience, backlit before the screen, in an expansion of the artist’s representation of the cinematic medium to include spectators and viewing spaces. Mauri made two similar versions of Schermo con pubblico in the 1960s, in varying sizes and colours (inv. 176, 751), plus some artist’s proofs printed as linocuts in the 1980s (inv. 333). For greater insight into the concept of ‘schermo’ in Mauri’s work, see the introductory essays.
