Standing in the centre of a small, narrow room, a woman dressed in black is struck by a bright beam of light: a projection of a 1930s home movie showing scenes from a bullfight. The moving images race across the room’s three adjoining walls, contrasting with the stillness of the performer, actress and mime Miriam Vender, looking with an intense, never absent gaze. Around the woman’s neck, a red scarf is poised mid-air, as if held up by a breath of wind. The notes of a Bulgarian trumpet resound around the room. La corrida was presented just once, at the Fondazione Volume! in Rome, as part of the 2005 ‘Cielo Vicino’ (Close Sky) solo exhibition.
