NOTE:
Multimedia collage on canvas composed of typical knick-knacks, counterfeit goods and souvenirs sold illegally by African immigrants on Italian streets in the 1990s. These goods would be laid out on sheets, then quickly folded away into sacks to flee law-enforcement raids. Mauri reprised the objects and layout of these ‘street displays’ to form two large-format pictures, which he hung on the wall, transforming these clandestine sheets into Art Nègre (inv. 485, 3370). In this version, white acrylic interventions and a kerosene lamp similar to the one used in The Aryan lenter-Alladin's lamp (inv. 616) placed the purchased objects in dialogue with other Mauri works.
