A black-and-white archival photograph of a group of children on the beach, together with a nun and lay women, Famiglia/Europafamiliemutter is perhaps a souvenir from the artist’s youth spent in Rimini, where during the Fascist period, ‘Opera nazionale maternità e infanzia’ set up ‘summer colonies’ to foster the health and education of children from less-privileged social classes. The vinyl record hung below the photograph seems to anticipate later works in Mauri’s ‘La voce del Padrone’ (His Master’s Voice) series.
