Photographic print on board, on which the artist intervened with glazes based on water, vinegar, ammonia and aniline in different colours, creating a filter that transparently displays the image of a young man walking along, eyes downcast, putting up no resistance to the uniformed soldiers escorting him. The man was one of the protesters at Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989, photographed just before being executed. Mauri replicated the photos from that tragic event and presented them in various works displayed at the ‘Studenti’ exhibition-installation (inv. 3758), and in his Cina Asia Nuova (inv. 444) wall of suitcases. When choosing his subjects, Mauri did not draw on iconic images from the protests – such as Jeff Widener’s Unknown Rebel, in which a lone young man standing in the middle of the street blocks a platoon of tanks; he dwelt on the tragedy of death, as seen through the lost gazes of the young victims and their equally young executioners.
